August Poetry Postcards

The countdown has begun. Although we’re still savoring spring, August will be here before we know it, and with August comes Poetry Postcards! Each August — 2015 is the ninth year — Paul Nelson wrangles a prodigious list of participants into a semblance of order for the August Poetry Postcard Fest.

To play, you simply gather postcards, get on the list and each day write a first-draft poem on one of the postcards and mail it off to someone on your list. It’s fun, it’s inspiring and it puts poems in your mailbox!

The official call won’t go out until early July, but this is the perfect time to start gathering the 31 postcards you’ll need, stocking up on postcard stamps* and, most importantly, subscribing to Paul Nelson’s blog so you get the announcement as soon as it comes out!

It’s also a good time to read Paul’s Poetry Postcard post, which has general guidelines and explains changes to this year’s event, including a nominal fee.

*Note that the postal service has announced forthcoming, but as yet undated, increases to the price of postcard stamps (from $0.34 to $0.35) and international mail (including postcards) (from $1.15 to $1.20).
