playing catch up

January 9, 2016

sportsIt has come to our attention that while The Poetry Department is deeply devoted to the sport of poetry, we may not have devoted adequate space to the poetry of sports. To make up for that oversight, here are some links (with special thanks to the Poetry Foundation, which has been more diligent in their reporting):

An assortment of BASEBALL poems collected by the Poetry Foundation.

A collection of BASKETBALL poems from the Poetry Foundation.

Poetry about FOOTBALL (U.S.) from the Poetry Foundation.

Lisa D. Mickey wrote “O Caddie! My Caddie! A Look at Golf Poetry Through the Years” in the April 5, 2014 edition of The New York Times.

An prose article about SOCCER by poet Charles Simic in the New York Review of Books and “Footy Verse,” an article on the laureates of soccer poetry by Rosie Schaap.

Finally, a brand-new anthology from Ireland: Everything to Play For: 99 Poems about Sport.
