This is such a good idea it bears repeating. For the second year in a row, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has challenged mayors across Canada to invite a poet to open a council meeting in March or April with a poem. Launched by Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco in 2012, the Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge honors UNESCO’s World Poetry Day (March 21) and National Poetry Month (April) by celebrating “poetry, writing, small presses and the contribution of poets and all writers to the rich cultural life in our country.”

Will U.S. mayors step up to the challenge? What about businesses, clubs and civic groups? One poet. One poem. Easy…
