at one hundred

March 24, 2019

Today, March 24, is the one hundredth birthday of Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Co-founder of City Lights, prolific poet, playwright, publisher, painter, and activist, Ferlinghetti is being celebrated in San Francisco and elsewhere. The New York Times offers a Ferlinghetti-inspired tour of The City, while the poet speaks for himself in this article and interview in SFGate. As if a hundred years on the planet is not enough to celebrate, Ferlinghetti’s first collection of poems, A Coney Island of the Mind, has recorded sales of more than one million copies.
Happy Birthday, Mr. F!

In addition to the zillions of people, readings, panels, books, and so on, at AWP, one of the major attractions is events held offsite. AWP has helpfully assembled a list of offsite events to be held in Portland and nearby communities, Tuesday, March 26, through Sunday, March 31, 2019. It’s still growing, so check back.

World Poetry Day

film in 48 hours

March 20, 2019

We’ve mentioned Motionpoems here a number of times. “Motionpoems explores the space between poets and other artists to create hybrid artworks that connect with contemporary audiences in new ways.”

In keeping with that mission, Motionpoems is currently running a (very modest) Kickstarter campaign for Hothouse. The project matches four award-winning poets with four cutting-edge filmmakers and gives them 48 hours to produce a film.

The all-or-nothing campaign ends Wednesday, April 10, and the Hothouse films will be screened at the Loft Literary Center’s Wordplay Festival in Minneapolis on Sunday, May 12, 2019. Read all about it on Kickstarter.
