The winners of the 2020 Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest were selected and notified back in April. When, by necessity, the awards ceremony was rescheduled from May to October, it seemed like surely an in-person celebration would be possible. Alas.

But there will be a celebration, online, on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at 7:00pm. We will hear from this year’s judges, Roger Gilman and Kami Westhoff, and from the poets who have waited so patiently to share their words.

Request a Zoom link and password for this year’s virtual Awards Ceremony by emailing BoyntonPoetryContest@hotmail.com.

Tonight in Bellingham!

Mount Baker Theatre

It’s not often that this particular blogger steps out from behind the veil of anonymity, but if not now, when? I am the very grateful recipient of the 2016 Ken Warfel Fellowship, established to distinguish and reward those poets who, like Ken Warfel, have made substantial contributions to their poetry communities. This blog, The Poetry Department, which I launched in July 2010 (today’s post is the 2,253rd), is a significant part of that contribution.

It would be an honor and a pleasure to see you in the audience this evening, Saturday, October 22, 2016, at the award ceremony. The doors open at 6:45pm and events get underway at 7:00pm. Please join me at the Mount Baker Theatre, Encore Room, 104 North Commercial Street, Bellingham, Washington. (Use the Champion Street door to enter the Encore Room.) Hope to see you there!

countdown

March 30, 2016

countdownOkay, Whatcom County poets, you have today (March 30), and you have tomorrow (March 31) until 6:00pm to submit your poems to the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. It’s too late to mail your poem, but you can deliver it to Mindport Exhibits, 210 W. Holly Street, Bellingham (open both days Noon to 6pm) OR email it to BoyntonPoetryContest@hotmail.com. Of course, read the guidelines carefully — line count and character count matter here, and poems that don’t meet the guidelines will be disqualified. This year’s judges are Luther Allen and Luci Shaw and we have it on good authority that they want to read YOUR poem!

P.S. Whether you submit a poem or not, be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, May 12, 2016, and join the judges, the award winners, the contest committee and poetry fans from all over at the 2016 Boynton Awards Ceremony, 7:00pm at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.
