Poem in Your Pocket Day

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, today, Friday, April 29, is Poem in Your Pocket Day. You may always have a poem in your pocket, ready to share, but in case not, the Academy of American Poets and The League of Canadian Poets have put together a 60-page Poem in Your Pocket Day PDF of poems and other resources, including instructions on how to create a folded swan (as a means of sharing a poem).

The League of Canadian Poets has just posted the 2022 Book Awards longlists. There are three awards: the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award award recognizes a first book of poetry published by a Canadian writer in the preceding year; the Pat Lowther Memorial Award recognizes a book of poetry published by a Canadian woman in the preceding year; and the Raymond Souster Award recognizes a book of poetry by a League member published in the preceding year. Sunday, February 14, 2021, is Valentine’s Day and here are a couple of sweet options.

The League of Canadian Poets presents Poetry in Union. You book a 15-minute time slot (7:00am to 1:00pm Pacific) with a Canadian poet and after a brief conversation you will receive a poem written specially for you and your sweetheart. Advance booking recommended.

From Noon to 3:00pm on Sunday, the Olympia Poetry Network (OPN) and Cultivating Voices LIVE Poetry presents an international celebration of poets laureate: Laureate Lovefest. Poets laureate from Ireland, Canada, and across the U.S. will participate in a three-hour lovefest of readings and conversation, including special video readings by former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser and current U.S. Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. See the lineup (including Claudia Castro Luna, Kim Stafford, and former Youth Poet Laureat of Seattle Azura Tyabji) and register here.

Tonight, Friday, August 28, 2020, 5:00pm Pacific, the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival, in partnership with the League of Canadian Poets, presents a free online poetry showcase: Hot Nights. Cool Poets. The program is just an hour long, so don’t be late. Registration is required for Zoom link.

Poet/presenters include Margaret Atwood, Cicely Belle Blain, Sadiqa de Meijer, Mathew Henderson, Julie Joosten, Canisia Lubrin, Randy Lundy, A. F. Moritz, Tyler Pennock, Rasiqra Revulva, Kevin Spenst, John Steffler, and Lily Wang.
