Walt does the heavy lifting

September 21, 2019

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) honored the 200th anniversary of the birth of Walt Whitman with a new stamp in its Literary Arts series. The 85-cent stamp is intended for domestic First-Class Mail weighing up to 3 ounces. The stamp was issued on September 12, 2019, at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site in Huntington Station, New York. More information here.

And as long as we’re on the subject, we should mention that Canada Post is honoring Leonard Cohen with three stamps featuring the poet/artist during different phases of his 60-year career. The new stamps will be available to the public today, September 21, which would have been Cohen’s 85th birthday. Further details in the Montreal Gazette.

You have until September 8, 2019, to take in Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything at the Jewish Museum in New York City.

Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything is the first exhibition entirely devoted to the imagination and legacy of the influential singer/songwriter, man of letters, and global icon from Montréal, Canada. The exhibition includes commissioned works by a range of international artists who have been inspired by Cohen’s style and recurring themes in his work, a video projection showcasing Cohen’s own drawings, and an innovative multimedia gallery where visitors can hear covers of Cohen’s songs by musicians such as Lou Doillon; Feist; Moby; and The National with Sufjan Stevens, Ragnar Kjartansson, and Richard Reed Parry, among others.

Poetry. Music. Inspiration.

In case you miss it in New York, the exhibit will be on view at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, September 17, 2020 – January 24, 2021.

The reader’s voice can give new meaning, or new appreciation, to a poem. The jazz vocalist/composer Luciana Souza offers yet another take on poetry with her musical interpretations.

In Souza’s latest album, The Book of Longing, she applies her vocal rhythms to poems by Leonard Cohen, Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Christina Rossetti, as well as several of her own poems. But this is not Souza’s first outing with poetry. In Neruda, she interprets 11 poems by Pablo Neruda, and her earlier recordings include other songs and poems by Leonard Cohen.
