Poetry at 100

Poetry Magazine 100Poetry Magazine is one hundred years old this month. That’s a lot of years and a lot of poems. See the salute to Poetry on Harriet the blog or browse from the entire collection.

Happy Birthday, Poetry!

Poetry magazine, May 2011Every issue of the venerable (since 1912) Poetry magazine is densely packed with poems and text. Eric Elshtain, poet-in-residence at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, in Chicago, introduced the May 2011 issue of Poetry as a starting place in a recent workshop with children in the pediatrics ward of Stroger.

Within the magazine’s pages, the young patients discovered poems within poems, then combined them with images. The results are startling and moving.

See photos of these erasure-plus poems and read Fred Sasaki’s article, “From Snow City,” in Harriet, the blog of the Poetry Foundation.
