virtual book fair

February 17, 2021

The website doesn’t offer a lot of detail on how it works, but SMOL Fair is an alternative book fair that will be live online between Wednesday, March 3, and Sunday, March 7, 2021. There will be readings, giveaways, and discounts, plus, it’s a great introduction to the 130 participating presses, including many that may be entirely new to you.

If you’re a down-to-the-line holiday shopper and you’re anywhere near Portland, Publication Fair 2019 is for you! On Sunday, December 22, 2019, from Noon to 7:00pm, you’ll have a chance to browse the work of local small presses and artists — and you’ll still have time left for gift-wrapping. More here.

If you’re shopping or giving at this time of year (well, at any time of year), put your gifts where they can make a difference.

New book? Showcase it!

Poets House Showcase

If your poetry book (by an individual author, anthology, chapbook, biography, critical study, essay collection, CD, DVD, etc.) was published in the last year, here’s an opportunity to get it into a major collection and in front of a huge audience. Poets House (New York) invites poets and publishers to submit a single copy of each title for the Poets House Showcase, which will be held June 25 – August 15, 2015. Submission deadline: May 1, 2015.

More than 3,000 items were in the 2014 exhibition, representing work from over 650 commercial, university and independent presses.

There’s no special paperwork, but poets can email the librarian to see if a book is already in the collection. If not, Poets House suggests that you ask your publisher to send a copy or donate one yourself. All exhibited books become part of the Poets House library collection.

The Poets House library (some 60,000 volumes) is free and open to the public. The catalog is searchable online. If your book was not published in the last year, or if you would like to donate poetry books not currently in the catalog, Poets House is always happy to receive books for the collection.

Richard Hugo HouseRichard Hugo House (Seattle) will celebrate APRILFest with a Small Press Expo on Saturday, March 30, 2013, 11am-4pm. In addition to small press exhibits, there will be readings and musical performances throughout the day. Small Press Expo details here.

The APRILFest lowdown and lineup is here. APRIL (Authors, Publishers and Readers of Independent Literature) has a Facebook page, of course.

got five bucks?

Copper Canyon Press
For just five dollars (but hopefully more), you can become a Copper Canyon Press Poetry Patron and get a free book of poetry. Support your local (Pt. Townsend, WA) publisher! Check it out, then make a donation to this wonderful non-profit, now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Richard Hugo HouseOnce you’ve turned in your poem for the Sue Boynton Poetry Contest, what will you do with all that free time?

Why not whip down to Seattle and take in Recto Verso: an Independent Press Expo at Richard Hugo House? Just one of the events scheduled as part of Authors, Publishers and Readers of Independent Literature (APRIL), here’s a little more on Recto Verso: “Dozens of the finest small presses from the Northwest and beyond converge on the epicenter of Seattle’s literary world for a one-of-a-kind book fair. Book-buyers’ best chance to see a bevy of small press books rarely seen on bookstore shelves. The first twenty people get a free APRIL tote bag. Readings throughout the day in the Hugo House Theater. The Hugo House bar will be open.”

Sounds pretty tasty!
